Obituary for Helen Frances Viviand

Helen Frances Viviand 1945 - 2020


Helen Viviand passed away on April 30, 2020 while under the gentle care of Seasons Hospice in Miami after a long series of illnesses. She was born in Miami on March 27, 1945 to Augusta and Lucien Viviand, but was raised in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania until her parents returned to Miami to retire. At that time, Helen earned her Bachelors Degree in Social Work from Barry College. She later earned her Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from St. Thomas University.

Helen is survived by her wife, the love of her life, Linda Mccombs. They were married in 2015 after having been together for 30 years. Helen considered these the greatest years of her life thanks to Linda's endearing companionship and incredible caregivi,ng especially during her lengthy illness. Her inĀ­ laws: Daisy, Brenda and William became welcome extensions of her otherwise small family.

Professionally , Helen loved providing 35 years of service to both the State of Florida Welfare Division and then to the Miami-Dade Public School System where she developed and managed their Employee Assistance Program. She provided intervent ion, crisis management and community resources to thousands during her career and referred them to a network she organized of mental health or substance abuse treatment providers and Twelve Step Programs to help her clients in their recovery. Helen took leader ship roles the South Florida EAP Association and the Dade County AIDS Task Force, just to name a few, in the 1980s.

She was also committed for 30 years to providing service for the Unity on the Bay Church as a Board Member and leader of the Angels Everywhere Team as she helped the Church become a beacon of hope and outreach to the community with many drives for children, the homeless, holidays and the Arts. In 2012, the M iami-Dade County Commission designated December 18th as Helen Viviand Day in gratitude for all she accomplished in t he many communities she supported.

Over the course of Helen's life, and in addition to the vast number of people whose lives she helped and saved, she enjoyed many wonderful and long personal friendships, pro fessional colleagues, OA fellowship members, sponsorsand sponsees as well as her neighborhood family.
