Obituary

Selma Meadows, 96, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2020 surrounded by her children and loved ones. Selma was born on September 5,1924 in New York City, to Simon & Tillie (Sudzin) Goldin. Selma was predeceased by her brother Eli. W. Goldin. Selma’s legacy is survived by her children, two sons, Michael Hershfield of Mclean, Va., Ben Hershfield of Helsinki, Finland, two daughters, Tana Petracek, husband John, of Falls Church, Va., Karen Leeds and husband Mike of Harmony, Fla. nephew Steven Tardonia of Raleigh, N.C., and sister – in-law Betty Tardonia of Monument, CO.
Selma attended New York City schools, graduating from Walton High School in the Bronx, followed by Rider College in New Jersey, with a major in English.
Selma moved to Miami Beach in 1959. In 1961, Selma married Milton Hershfield and they shared 22 years together, raising a family in North Miami Beach. Along the way, they enjoyed their common interests of music, both piano players, Milton a gifted & multi - dimensional musician, the theatre, and time always spent with family & enduring friendships. A highly creative woman, Selma’s sense of humor was always laser sharp, insightful, and most of all “funny.”
Coupled with keen observational instincts, a highly developed sense of style, Selma had a personality and natural charisma that knew no boundaries.
In 1988 Selma married Norman Meadows of New York. Based in Boca Raton, Selma & Norman enjoyed global travel adventures, with summers spent in New York & Vermont. Friendships blossomed and Selma’s book of experiences multiplied.
Anchored by the love of her family, Selma settled into Boca Raton, with travel and her passionate “affair” with the movies, particularly those produced before 1955 and virtually all foreign films flourished. In 2005, Selma met Morrie Ruchin of Hartford, Ct. and now, a full time Boca Raton resident. For 11 years, Selma & Morrie were inseparable, all the way reinventing life in your 80’s and beyond. The new “team” devoured both their shared love of the arts, travel, time spent with family, but perhaps most of all having each other.
Selma Meadows loved her children, to experience life, write a funny jingle or two, and always, always, have something exciting to look forward too. Along with that, she loved a great joke, an odd yet intriguing story, and a good solid laugh. She was a true force of nature, who will be forever missed yet never forgotten.
